An Attempt at Flash Fiction (for Bogdan Dragos)

Andrew Dabar's avatarAndrew Dabar

“It’s my life!”

In the week following Christmases ago, an old timey preacher listened gravely, though not condemningly, to a young man as he confessed his love and determination to run off with a married woman in the congregation–after which–the tall grandfather clock in the far corner of the study seemed indignant and extra loud, as if it were counting down to the Day of Judgement instead of the new year.

In the thoughtful silence which ensued, the preacher removed his thick glasses, fogged the lenses with his breath, and wiped each slowly with a handkerchief–the one he always used to blot holy sermon sweat from his brow. Swiveling around in a squeaky chair, he reached for the paper tray situated beneath the HP printer he barely knew how to use and retrieved a clean sheet.

“Son, if you came here for my blessing, you certainly don’t have it. But…

“Lack of love,” she once told him, “can turn

a man into a cracked shell. Turn

his steps into rotten

butterfly wings falling. Turn his

breath into ether. His heart into a sick slug

struggling to escape a haunted bog.”

Sure, sure

but then again his parents told him

long ago when he was a child

that if he kept making ugly faces

he’ll remain like that forever

Well, now his parents weren’t here

and she wasn’t here

He was all alone

with his cat who gently licked at its genitals

besides him on the other pillow

Other than the cat’s saliva

breaking apart in contact with its fur

and skin

there was no sound in the room

it was all so peaceful

There was a gentle drizzle outside

just enough to keep people

and noisy children off the streets

It was perfect

Had she been here

TV Remote by Bogdan Dragos

a thief had entered the house

and all

he stole

was the TV remote

Perhaps some prankster kid

because at times

the TV would act strange. So he’s probably

close and messing with them

there was only the two of them

home. The old man with

dementia and his

daughter, not a very young woman herself

unable to speak,

the old man

began to cry because he couldn’t

watch his favorite

cartoons on TV

and he cried and cried and kept crying

about it

It was too much

and, the daughter thought, it was

about time. About time she

left the past behind and

started her

own life. She was 39, childless,

no husband, no boyfriend, nothing.

Over the next few days

she arranged for the old man

to be placed into foster care. He was still

crying.

Sacrifices had to be made. She was wiping her

you know you’re depressed when

the window in your room

looks better with the

blinds on

than with a clear view of the outside

“But I’m all right,” he said

to himself

Beyond the thin wall

he heard wheezing breath and grunts

and moans. His roommate

was living the college life, alright.

Kid kept saying it is game that gets

it’s easy to say that

when he visits.

Meanwhile he’s been bartending for

dropping out of college wasn’t

the greatest of ideas. Neither

knew she cared for him because

she wouldn’t stop nagging him

to go back to college. Because

open casket funeral by Bogdan Dragos

j re crivello's avatarGobblers by Masticadores

what would be the reason to have an open casket funeral? Why should the living see the dead? He addressed the questions to no one in particular but his dead wife answered from the picture on the wall "Don't you wanna see me, darling?" "Not like that, I don't," he said. "That's why I have your portrait. So I don't have to look at your dead body in the casket. But your mom wouldn't understand..." "Darling, I think you're the one who doesn't understand. And I think it's time we talk about your therapist." "What about my therapist?" "You tell me. You tell me why did she have to tell you that she's single now and looking to settle. I thought she was supposed to help you cope with the premature death of your wife, not tell you her problems." "Dear, please..." "And one more thing. I don't like the…

how can you be such a monster? by Bogdan Dragos

j re crivello's avatarGobblers by Masticadores

he spent four weeks
away from his family
in a rented apartment
somewhere on
the outskirts
of town

he told them that
he needed this
he was a writer
needed to focus on his work
conducting his research
undistracted

his little girl would call
from time to time
asking daddy to hold his
phone against his forehead
while she made a kissing sound
on the other line

very wholesome
except he lied about
holding the phone
against his forehead

“How can you be
such a monster?”
asked the naked prostitute
sitting on the edge of his bed

“Shut up,” he said
tossed his phone on the desk
and unbuckled

more than enough to explain by Bogdan Dragos

j re crivello's avatarGobblers by Masticadores

there was nothing
to explain here

the man’s wife told them
everything they
needed to know

Her husband wrote poetry

Yes, that would be enough
to explain why
he cut off his penis
and tried to use it
as a pen
before collapsing
on the desk,
blood pooling
at his feet below

Being a poet was
more than enough
explanation for
what he did

She didn’t need
to tell the paramedics
that her husband
had been looking
for inspiration

“He’s a poet,”
was more than
enough

They understood
