she’s got this big

lizard

that I don’t

even know the name of

and walks

it around in a

baby stroller

“It needs the sun,” she

says. “And it

needs me as her mother.”

When she’s not at her

dish-washing job

at the two-star restaurant

she’s scouting

the local park,

looking for trees with bird nests

to steal the eggs

or even better,

the chicks

and feed them to the

big lizard

Not exactly the crime

to send one

behind the bars

but she did

get in

some trouble for it

“I never liked the scent

of peeling scales,”

she said, “until I

smelt it on her belly,

between her hind legs.

If you haven’t

seen angels

before,

you are invited to look

upon her

beauty. Please only

look, don’t touch.”

“Yeah,” I said, “she’s pretty

nice. What’s

her name?”

But instead of answering

the days follow each other like ants towards a dead thing and after enough of them pass by, you finally realize you are that dead thing And that's supposed to be alright. After all, no one is excused from this All we can do is make the journey pleasant However, when the alarm wakes you up at 6:30 in the morning, announcing that there's yet another day in which you'll have to attend your duties of slaving away for others to get rich, when you're slipping into the other half of your life not bringing along any fulfilled dreams despite trying again and again... Another day in which you'll be assaulted by questions like, "Hey, so when are you going to get married?" "Have you even someone to marry?" "Why don't you get another job. Aren't you a bit too old for this one?" "How much do they pay you?"…

no, despite what I wanted

to believe

for the sake of

reality

she was not the

Leatherface

She was just an

ordinary girl

holding a

human face with a bit

of hair

It was clearly something

very precious to her

“The only thing I have

left from my

father,” she said, turning

it from one side

to the other

and back. “It used to cover

his face and it never

was something pretty. But

what did I know at the time?

I was just a kid.

He came home drunk as usual,

but this time

he was also beat up

real good.

Some friends roughed him

up after he

sold them a bad tip at the

bets. That’s what I

understood later in life.

I loved that man

like any daughter loves her

father.

I didn’t know he was bad

It was hard to decide

they told him that the hospital's windows were barred not to prevent them from going out, but to prevent others from getting in He had to believe them. Had to believe everything he was told here and do as he was told and he was so far successful It was a peaceful life but as he kept living it he realized that, in itself, that was the problem There was another patient in the room with him who constantly woke up crying and begging for forgiveness he made the crying sounds of a dog in great pain and when the staff came to calm him and inject him with another dose of drugs he cowered into a corner and began whispering to himself about the days of youth when he hit a dog in the head with the edge of a shovel, just as it was feeding its puppies with…

He fixes his clothes

“Eh, bad town to be a writer,” he

Should’ve gone to

For now

I’m staying here and

I keep writing

The children

of course, it's not easy If it were easy everybody would've done it But this... this required courage above all. It required guts. It required an overdose of nonconforming And today was the day that proved he was just the right man for it Often the right man is the insane man, the soul who dares to be the revolutionary who goes against the system Dammit, everything was in place. The cards were dealt and all bets placed. The muse was caged and ready to be milked "Here I go," he said, ignoring the knocks and the shouts coming from beyond the sturdy door of his office The nonbelievers were trying to reach out to him fools without vision like his mother and his wife and mother-in-law and the children Oh, they demanded to know for what reason did he suddenly decide to quit his high-paying job at the law…

every time I glanced at her face I was reminded of the character trope of the cute and exaggeratedly naive girl who's not aware of her beauty and is predisposed to having others take advantage of her Of course that was only in my head but she really did have an immense heart She had two big dogs and a bunch of cats, I never knew exactly how many But I knew and saw with my own eyes that she kissed them all on the snout the dogs and the cats too and she'd hold her tongue out and let the pets lick it and that was perfectly okay in her household "You're jealous!" she told me when I cringed and backed away as she tried to kiss me. "Are you one of those crazy possessive types who equates kissing a pet with cheating?" "What? No, no, I just..." "I…

Our parents told us

that this city

is growing, expanding

but as far as we

see

it’s only

doing so upwards

We are still

young, still harboring

hopeful visions

that one day

we’ll leave

and we talk about

these hopes

on the curb overlooking

the park

at 9 PM

“If we don’t make it out

soon,” says a friend, “we’re

all gonna end up

His hand is wrapped around

an opened beer can

and a finger detaches to

point over the low

at a girl who sits

alone on

the swing

We all knew her

thought not

personally

just from sight

She came to the park daily

and stood

by herself,
